India bans 118 more mobile apps including PUBG

 



India on Wednesday banned more than 100 mobile applications, including the highly popular mobile gaming app PUBG, after banning 59 Chinese apps in the first round earlier this year.  The apps were banned, citing data security concerns following new tensions between India and China in the border region in eastern Ladakh.


  According to an official statement, a total of 118 apps have been banned by the Ministry of Information and Technology.  The ministry said that restricted mobile applications are a precursor to India's sovereignty, integrity, defense and public order.


  Banned apps include Baidu, Baidu Express Edition, Tencent Watchlist, FaceU, WeChat Reading and Tencent Weyun, as well as PUBG Mobile and PUBG Mobile Lite, Statement Read.  According to some reports, India has around 33 million active PUBG players, making it one of the most popular apps downloaded in the country.  PUBG reportedly sees 13 million users per day.


  The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology received several complaints from various sources, including reports about the misuse of some mobile apps available on the Android and iOS platforms.  The complaints were allegedly of stealing users' data and secretly transmitting it unauthorizedly to servers, which were likely locations outside India.

  "The compilation of these figures, mining by hostile elements for India's national security and defense and its framework, which ultimately imposes on India's sovereignty and integrity, is a matter of deep and urgent concern that needs emergency measures," the statement  said.


  The Indian Cyber ​​Crime Coordination Center under the Ministry of Home Affairs also sent a recommendation to block these controversial apps.  In the public sector too, there has been a strong demand for some time to take strict action against mobile applications that harm the sovereignty of India as well as the privacy of citizens.
